Matt Warren first debuted on the Nashville scene as an artist in 1996 with his band, 40 East. His next endeavor as an artist was with his band Papa Joe in 2001. They released their debut record,Storybook Ending, on Warren’s own independent record label Stonewall Music.
Warren, as a Nashville-native, is a rarity amongst the transplants working and writing on Music Row that he calls co-writers, comrades, and peers. In 2002, Warren made his professional staff writer debut onto the Row’s elite published songwriter scene when he signed his first deal with House of Fame & the Muscle Shoals music icon/legendary Fame Studios founder/record producer/Grammy winner/Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Rick Hall and his two sons Mark & Rodney. Warren’s first cut as a House of Fame writer was “Puttin’ Memories Away”, co-written with Gary Allan and featured on the Oprah Winfrey show when Gary was her guest.
Twelve years later, Warren has securely established himself firmly into the scene as not only an extremely energetic and talented artist, but also as a successful and well respected award-winning hit songwriter. He has had one song recorded by Americana music icon Jim Lauderdale and one song recorded by Bruce Springsteen co-writer and band mate, Joe Grushecky.
Warren has had 15 songs recorded by country star Gary Allan, five of which are on Gary’s latest record for Universal Music Group. Warren is the recipient of two ASCAP Awards for most spins in a year (2009, 2013). In 2009, he won the ASCAP award for the top 10 hit “Learning How to Bend”. In 2013, he co-wrote the ASCAP award winning #1 smash hit & all-time biggest selling Gary Allan single ever, “Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)”, which was also nominated for the 2014 ACM song of the year award. He has six songs on the new Gary Allan record soon to be released.
Currently, Warren continues to work on his own artistry and is ready to tour behind his new, critically acclaimed record “Self-Titled”. It was released in the Spring of 2014 on his own independent label, United We Jam Records. “Self-Titled” is produced by Grammy, CMA & ACM multi-award winning musician & artist Tom Bukovac. It was tracked by Grammy Award winning engineer/producer Justin Niebank & mixed by Grammy Award winning engineer/producer Mills Logan. The band features Steve Gorman on drums (The Black Crowes, Trigger Hippy), Audley Freed on guitar (Black Crowes, Sheryl Crow), Tom Bukovac on guitar, slide guitar & keys (John Fogerty, Trigger Hippy), Michael Rhodes on bass (Ray Charles, Willie Nelson), John Lancaster on piano, Rhodes & Nord (Gary Allan, Will Hoge), Johnny Neel on Hammond B-3 & piano (Allman Brothers, Blue Floyd), Nick Buda on drums (Col. Bruce Hampton & The Code Talkers, Hank Williams Jr.), Jedd Hughes on guitar & beer (Rodney Crowell & Emmylou Harris) & Pat McLaughlin on guitar (Johnny Cash, The Subdudes). The record features vocalists Hillary Lindsey, Sarah Buxton, Pat McLaughlin, Carey Ott, and Bonnie Bishop on backing vocals.
This new chapter of his career will find Warren signing original music from the stage instead of the writing room, and as a roots rock Artist rather than a country hit song-maker. What remains constant, however, is Warren’s undeniable Southernality, his heart, his genuine charm, the strength of his voice, and his ability to front a band with an “in-the-pocket” groove as deep as the old New Orleans funk greats before him.
